A child’s concept map

This is a concept map created independently by a six and a half year old, Year 2 child.

It was created at the start of some work on electricity. The links are words or simple phrases. The most important concepts to this child, as a result of her own experience, were ‘light’ and ‘toys’, so her concept map is in fact arranged hierarchically for her. There is also some evidence of cross-links having been made between how electricity is generated using wind turbines and how electricity is brought to our houses to be used in particular ways – two different domains of knowledge for that child and represented as such on her concept map.
